People with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) commonly experience problems with sleep, and these sleep problems may contribute to the symptoms associated with ASD.
The Neurology Department at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is currently seeking autistic adult volunteers to participate in a clinical research trial to evaluate the ability of an experimental medication to improve sleep and/or behavioral symptoms of ASD. This trial will be conducted via the internet but study staff will be available to answer questions by email or phone. Study staff will also be available to meet in person if a problem arises.
We are recruiting adults aged 22 years old or older diagnosed with ASD by an autism specialist (pediatrician, neurologist, psychiatriprest, or psychologist) to participate in this study. The participating subject must live in New York State within a 90-minute drive to Stony Brook University Hospital, and live with an observer – a parent, partner, spouse, or roommate -- who is willing to provide periodic behavioral assessments of the subject via an online survey.
What is involved:
- Screening medical examination with your regular primary care physician (or other qualified physician)
- Daily medication (active medication or placebo) before bed for 15 weeks
- You and your observer will fill out online surveys over the 20 week study period
The study will supply study mediations, but all other expenses including those associated with the physician screening visit will remain the responsibility of participating subjects. Since we are utilizing a cross-over study design, at some point all enrolled patients will have a chance to take active medication.
If you are interested, please fill out a screening survey:
