The Stony Brook University Neuromuscular Diseases and Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence - certified, by the ALS Association, offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for neuromuscular disorders in all age groups. These disorders, which include genetic, neurodegenerative, and immune mediated diseases, affect the peripheral nervous system and muscles. Common symptoms may include muscle cramps, weakness, muscle wasting, numbness, and difficulties with walking. 

The center has expertise in treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis, inflammatory myopathies, muscular dystrophies and other related conditions. Our primary goal is to deliver the highest quality care, relieve symptoms, promote safer mobility, and enhance our patients quality of life in an environment defined by compassion and mutual respect. 

Comprehensive Care and Expertise

At Stony Brook University, patients receive exceptional care delivered by a highly experienced multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and therapists. The center utilizes advanced diagnostic modalities for neuromuscular disorders. These include nerve conduction studies, electromyography, muscle and nerve biopsy, and genetic testing. Our specialists have experience in providing gene transfer therapy for patients with spinal muscular atrophy, Duchene muscular dystrophy, and familial ALS.

Patient Education and Support

Patient education is a core part of our mission. The center provides regular support groups and meetings for patients and their families, creating opportunities for open discussions. Counselors and social workers are always available to provide support and guidance.
