The Neurophysiology Section functions together with the Epilepsy and Neuromuscular Sections to provide the electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) functions that are critical to the diagnosis and determination of treatment efficacy for seizures and disorders of nerves or muscles. These procedures measure electrical currents generated by brain activity or muscle activity respectively. EEG brain wave activity becomes more highly synchronized and generalized across adjoining brain regions during a seizure. EMG activity is altered when there is nerve or muscle damage resulting from an injury or from a neuromuscular disease process.
Therefore, the Neurophysiology Section provides key support for the Epilepsy and Neuromuscular Sections and centers. In addition, because of the critical importance of neurophysiology for the care of patients with seizures and neuromuscular deficits, the Neurophysiology Section offers a Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship to train the clinical neurophysiologists of the future.
