Research Interests
Ani is interested in the mechanisms and advantages behind novel evolutionary adaptations in vertebrates. Currently, he is using a multi-proxy approach to reconstruct a finer resolution narrative of early archosaur pulmonary anatomy, with the goal of better understanding the transition from reptile to avian-style respiration, and how it affects biodiversity trends observed in the Mesozoic. Ani is part of the annual Snyder Quarry expedition to Ghost Ranch, NM and has done field work in the Hell Creek formation in eastern Montana as well.
His dissertation investigates bone surface texture responses to pulmonary diverticula in extant and extinct archosaurs, quantifying changes in costal morphology responsible for facilitating lung heterogeneity, and differential survivorship of archosaur clades across the end-Triassic extinction.
