Scott J. Moeller, PhD: Principal Investigator
Scott received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Michigan. He then completed postdoctoral training in addiction neuroimaging at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is currently a faculty member in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, where his lab uses sensitive behavioral and neuroimaging approaches to investigate cognition, emotion, and neural functioning in human drug addiction and comorbid conditions. He is also Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Psychiatry, an administrative position that involves mentoring clinicians in research. In his spare time, he enjoys walking, listening to podcasts (often while walking), video games, and following New York and University of Michigan sports.

Shayne Thomas, BA: Research Coordinator
Shayne graduated from The City College of New York in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Philosophy. Alongside his bachelor's degree, he earned his Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee (CASAC-T) certificate. For two years, he provided direct, clinical care services to individuals with substance use disorders. Currently, Shayne is primarily responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of a study that seeks to understand stress neurobiology in opioid use disorder. In his spare time, he enjoys programming computers. More specifically, Shayne is interested in developing software that can help improve behavior.

Francesca Giammanco, LMSW; Patient Recruiter and Clinical Rater
Francesca is a Clinical Research Associate in the Department of Psychiatry. She graduated from Adelphi University with a master’s in social work and later obtained her licensure (LMSW). Her primary responsibilities in the lab include recruiting interested and eligible patients to participate in our studies; she also carries out clinical assessments to help with data collection and determine eligibility. Francesca is inspired by the meaningful work the MMTI lab does and how our research will inform practice and treatment in the future. She hopes to always be a part of meaningful work that is aiming to improve people’s quality of life.
