Michael entered the Graduate Program in Genetics in 2012 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, also at SUNY Stony Brook University. Following his rotations, Michael joined Adan Aguirre’s lab where he is currently studying the process of myelination during development and remyelination following injury. Recently, Michael has been working on a project studying the role of ADAM17 in oligodendrocyte progenitors (OPs). While several studies have elucidated the significance of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase proteins (ADAMs) in peripheral nervous system myelination, but there is no evidence if they also play a role in oligodendrogenesis and central nervous system myelination and remyelination. His project has relevance to multiple sclerosis, where OPs, precursors to mature myelinating oligodendrocytes, have recently been highlighted as a therapeutic target to promote lesion repair. In collaboration with his clinical mentor, Dr. Louis Manganas, Michael hopes to extend his findings generated using animal models to more clinically relevant systems.
