SBMS Trainee: Mark Maurelli
I am a rising third-year PhD student in the Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology program. I completed my Bachelorof Engineering and Master of Science degrees at Stevens Institute of Technology. Now, in the lab of Dr. Shao-Jun Tang, I conduct research on HIV-associated pain using murine models. Specifically, I focus on the hyperalgesic effects ofcommon antiretrovirals known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and potential therapeutics to rectify this phenotype. Alongside my clinical mentor, Dr. Sharon Nachman, I plan to compare the biological markers of HIV-associated pain in patient samples with biological markers in murine models under similar conditions.
