1957 The State University of New York at Stony Brook was established in Oyster Bay in 1957.

1963 The Muir Commission Report commissioned by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller recommends establishing a medical school and teaching hospital.

1966 Edmund D. Pellegrino, MD, is Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of Medicine. He becomes the Dean of the School of Medicine in 1968.

1971 Medical school opens with a first class of 24; 8 women and 16 men are taught in temporary facilities on the South Campus for the three-year program.

1971 Construction of the Health Sciences Center begins.

1971 Mineola Hospital, Nassau County Medical Hospital and Brookhaven National Laboratory affiliate as teaching centers.

1972 President Toll appoints Marvin Kuschner, MD, as Acting Dean of Medicine.

1974 School of Medicine graduates its first MD class.

1974 LCME accreditation approves full program and permission to increase class size to 48 and admit 10 third year students from Sophie Davis Medical Program of CUNY.

1974 Medical degree goes to a four-year program.

1976 LCME accreditation grants permission to increase class size to 76 in 1980 and 100 in 1982.

1976 First graduate to receive both MD and PhD degrees.

1978 Basic Health Sciences program merges with Medicine under the Dean of Medicine.

1980 Class size increases to 76 with in-state tuition of $1200/year.

1980 Stony Brook University Hospital opens.

1981 MD/PhD Program is officially established.

1982 Class size increased to 100 students.

1986 Ground is broken for the future Long Island State Veterans Home.

1986 SNMA Chapter at Stony Brook is initiated.

1987 Scholars for Medicine accepts its first undergraduate students who will graduate in seven years with an MD degree.

1988 University President John Marburger appoints Jordan Cohen, MD, Dean of Medicine.

1989 Curriculum undergoes extensive revision including computer-assisted instruction.

1996 The State University at Stony Brook celebrates the 25th anniversary of the School of Medicine.

1997 First-year medical student initiates Evening of the Arts for the School showcasing medical students and faculty artistic talents.

1998 White Coat Ceremony tradition at Stony Brook begins.

2000 School surpasses 2000 graduates.

2005 President Strum Kenny appoints Richard Fine, MD, as the Dean of the School of Medicine.

2006 Clinical Skills Center training site opens.

2008 Stony Brook HOME (Health Outreach and Medical Education), a free medical-student run clinic, first opened its doors in Islip, NY.

2008 SBUH forges alliance with Southampton Hospital.

2009 School surpasses 3000 graduates.

2010 President Stanley, Jr., MD, appoints Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, as Stony Brook’s Dean and Senior Vice President of Health Sciences.

2011 Stony Brook University Medical Center launches Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

2012 HOST (Help Our Students Travel) was initiated to encourage alumni to house 4th year medical students who are visiting their city for residency interviews.

2014 School launches new LEARN (Learning focused, Experiential, Adaptive, Rigorous and Novel) Curriculum.

2016 White Coats for Black Lives Chapter was started at Stony Brook.

2017 Stony Brook Medicine welcomes Southampton Hospital to its healthcare system.

2017 School surpasses 4000 graduates.

2018 Stony Brook School of Medicine was renamed Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

2018 School launches Three-Year Medical Degree Program.

2019 The opening of the Medical and Research Translation (MART) building for cancer research and clinical services, as well as a new state-of-the-art auditorium and modular classrooms.

2019 Eastern Long Island Hospital joins the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system.

2019 The opening of the Hospital Pavilion, which contains Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and several intensive care units.

2020 Classes go virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 President Maurie McInnis, PhD, appoints William Wertheim, MD, as the Interim Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine.

2021 Members of the first class of ‘71 help don the White Coats on the incoming 136 students of the class of ‘21.
