The Division of Rheumatology has five faculty members and four fellowship positions for a two year accredited program. The program consists of inpatient and outpatient clinical services at Stony Brook University Medical Center and the VA Medical Center at Northport.
Clinical fellows spend their time performing consultations, attending conferences and using elective time for research projects or independent studies. Fellowship training leads to board eligibility in Rheumatology at the end of the second year.
Year 1
Patient Care
- General rheumatology out-patient clinics (minimum 3/week)
- All in-patient consultations and emergency referrals (6.5 months)
Didactic Rotation (Conferences)
- Medicine Grand Rounds weekly
- Faculty core lecture series: for the first two to three months (July-September)
- Clinical conference, board review and textbook rounds weekly
- Weekly basic science didactic course (6 months)
- Mandatory biostatistics course- 2 weeks/yr
- Radiology rounds/ lectures (biweekly)
- Combined clinical rounds with other specialties such as gastroenterology and nephrology
Required Rotations
- Osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease rotation (1 month)
- Orthopedic rotation (1 month)
- Diagnostic laboratory immunology rotation (0.5 months)
- Research (1 month)
- Elective (1 month)
Year 2
Patient Care
- General rheumatology out-patient clinics (minimum 3/week)
- All in-patient consultations and emergency referrals (4.5 months or 18 weeks)

- Medicine Grand Rounds weekly
- Faculty core lecture series: for the first two to three months (July-September)
- Clinical conference, board review and textbook rounds weekly
- Weekly basic science didactic course (6 months)
- Mandatory biostatistics course- 2 weeks/yr

- Pediatric rheumatology rotation (1 month)
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation (1 month)
- Orthotics (0.5 months)

Research (3 months total as delineated above)
- Design minimum of 1 project; execute, and analyze data; fellows are expected to have a research project with faculty during their training.
- Case reports and literature reviews, and clinical research
- Submit abstracts and prepare manuscripts for publication

- Radiology (MRI, procedures such as arthrography, vertebroplasty)
