The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology at Stony Brook University is to improve the vision and prevent blindness in those afflicted with eye diseases. Specifically, our Department aims to:
- Provide the highest quality of multi-specialty ophthalmic care, available to all in an ethical, cost-effective and compassionate manner at our patient-friendly facilities.
- Educate the next generation of physicians in eye diseases and their treatment.
- Conduct Research on ocular diseases including both clinical trials and basic research. Our research efforts will ultimately benefit patients on a global scale.
We pledge to our patients and referring health care providers that we will provide state-of-the-art eye care in an efficient, well-coordinated manner paying particular attention to the sensitivity and individual needs of each patient while promptly communicating with their personal health care providers who refer them to us.

The Stony Brook Ophthalmology residency is based at University Medical Center at Stony Brook - the only medical school and tertiary care facility on Long Island, serving a population of more than 2.8 million. Located 15 miles from the parent institution, the Northport VA hospital, as the only affiliate, is a 650 bed facility with 350,000 patient visits a year. There are more than 35,000 combined outpatient visits to the eye services at both institutions from the surrounding communities in Nassau and Suffolk County.
