Dr. Kontzias earned his MD at University of Athens Medical School, Greece in 2004. His postgraduate training includes residency training in internal medicine at Lincoln Medical Center of Weil Cornell, New York from 2007 to 2010 and Rheumatology Fellowship training at NIH from 2010 to 2013, including one year of training in translational research in rheumatic diseases.

Dr. Kontzias joined the Cleveland Clinic in July 2013 and served as staff rheumatologist in the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Disease (ranked No.2 by US News) until June 2018. Dr. Kontzias also served as Director of the Multidisciplinary Autoinflammatory Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kontzias joined the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, Department of Medicine, Stony Brook University in June, 2018. 

Dr. Kontzias is one of the national and international experts in the field of autoinflammatory diseases/periodic fever syndromes. His subspecialty interest includes seronegative spondyloarthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome. He has a special interest in clinical care and research of idiopathic pericarditis, as well as immune checkpoint blockade of cancer immunotherapy-associated autoimmunity.
