Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma

  • This is the second most common form of glaucoma.

  • It usually presents quickly with the rapid onset of pain, red eye, and loss of vision. Other symptoms may include foggy or hazy vision, sensitivity to light, nausea, and vomiting.

  • Emergency treatment is essential to prevent vision loss. Topical medications assist in lowering the pressure. Systemic medications can also be used in the emergency situation. Laser iridotomy treatment is a frequent option.

  • Risk factors include hyperopia (farsightedness) and cataracts.

  • Less common forms may present with intermittent headache, like migraines, or the absence of any symptoms.
