Meredith Regina, MD, PhD Associate Chief, Ophthalmology Section, Northport VA |
The VA at Northport is a comprehensive care facility, a major academic affiliate of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University and an integral component of the ophthalmology program at Stony Brook.
The Northport VA maintains strong ties with all Departments of the School. Faculty and house staff are appointed jointly to the Renaissance School of Medicine and the Northport VA. The VA at Northport serves the largest regional veteran population in the United States.
The in-patient services consist of 100 acute-care general medicine beds, a combined ICU / CCU, and an on -site Nursing Home and Hospice. Subspecialty care in all areas of ophthalmology is provided by full-time faculty on site at the Northport VA.
First and third year residents rotate at the Northport VA where outpatients and surgical cases are managed in a supervised residentoperated clinic that sees about 6000 visits per year and also provides the bulk of their surgical experience.
As a resident-run service, residents gain invaluable Practice-based learning and Systems-based experience(among the other Competencies) and are responsible for their own patients, clinic operations, interacting with other services and supervising rotating clerks all with a full-time on-site attending supervisor.
A competency-based curriculum detailing the goals, objectives of each module, as well as all learning activities is available for inspection.
