Research Timeline

Expectations by Year:

PGY-1 & 2

  • Decide on a research topic & find a faculty mentor
    • Contact Dr. Heslin or Dr. Newton if you need help finding a topic or mentor
  • Perform a literature search on your topic
  • Decide on a research questionhypothesis
  • Complete your CITI training
  • Present your research idea to Drs. Heslin, Newton, or Singer
    • You will be asked to provide: title of your project, research question, hypothesis, literature review results, and methods.
  • Write & submit your IRB
  • After your IRB is approved, begin your project and data collection

PGY-3

  • Collect & analyze your data
  • Write an abstract and submit it to a regional or national conference (optional)
  • Create a poster and submit a draft for faculty feedback (mid May)
  • Present your poster at our Resident Research Day (mid June)
