The Stony Brook University main campus is located on the north shore of Long Island approximately 60 miles from New York City. The museums, theaters, concert halls and sports venues of NYC are a short drive or train ride away. The Long Island Sound and its beautiful beaches are within a few minutes drive of the University while renowned south shore beaches and the Atlantic ocean are only a half hour away. Long Island has dozens of parks and nature preserves with diverse habitats including pine barrens forests, wetlands, an ancient riverbed formed by receding glaciers, and a tall grass prairie. You will also find miles of hiking, cycling, and mountain biking trails, vineyards and wineries, craft breweries, quaint villages and harbors, and historical sites such as Sagamore Hill, the home of President Theodore Roosevelt.
