Director of Residency Training, Michael Schwartz, MD announced the
appointment of Ami Baxi, MD and Jeremy Bennett, MD as chief residents in
the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. Dr. Baxi will be
the Chief Resident from July through December 2012, while Dr. Bennett
will serve from January through June 2013.
The duties of Chief
Resident include mentoring residents and medical students, maintaining
the residents’ clinical schedules and managing the continuing day
treatment program. Chief Residents are selected on the basis of their
academic achievements, clinical skills and leadership abilities.
Dr.
Baxi, who grew up in Goshen NY, earned her bachelor’s degree in Applied
Economics and Business Management from Cornell University and her
medical degree from St. George’s University in Grenada. She is currently
working on a study with Dr. Gabrielle Carlson on weight changes in
children who are taking atypical antipsychotic medications. She
presented an abstract of her work at the Stony Brook Women in Medicine
Research Day and will present a poster at the annual meeting of the
American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in October.
Dr.
Bennett is a native of Pennsylvania who received his undergraduate
degree from Lafayette College and his medical degree from Temple
University in Philadelphia. He has long been interested in bioethics and
serves as a member of the Medical Center’s Institutional Ethics
Committee.
Dr. Bennett said that he is especially looking forward
to teaching medical students who are rotating through the inpatient
adult service on 10 North. For her part, Dr. Baxi is hoping to provide
residents with additional opportunities to share their ideas for
improvement.
