Gabrielle Carlson, MD, Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University, was featured in an article by Aaron Levin in the December 17, 2010 edition of Psychiatry News, titled "Are Clinicians too Quick to Diagnose Bipolar Illness in Children?"
Dr. Carlson's comments were made during the annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in New York in October. Describing a cluster of characteristics - including rages and meltdowns, problems with change, and a need for immediate gratification - that define 'difficult temperament' in children, Dr. Carlson pointed to need for a better system of diagnostic classification.
