June 4, 2013 - Professor Andrew Francis, MD was the first recipient of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s award for excellence in teaching residents. The award was presented at the school’s annual Awards Dinner on May 22, 2013.

Dr. Francis was nominated for the honor by his colleague, Laura Fochtmann, MD, who described him as “an excellent teacher who has been extremely committed to the education of residents over his 25 years as a member of the faculty.” Citing his service as Associate Director of the residency training program, his teaching activities and his mentoring of residents in both clinical and research projects, Dr. Fochtmann said that “it is quite fitting that Dr. Francis is being recognized by Stony Brook Medicine for excellence in residency teaching.”

Dean Kenneth Kaushansky, MD instituted a series of new awards this year to honor faculty who epitomize excellence in research, teaching, clinical care, community outreach and mentoring. The dean described the recipients as “the very best of our faculty.”
