Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Grand Rounds Schedule: 2011 - 2012

The Stony Brook University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Grand Rounds schedule for 2011 - 2012 features nationally and internationally prominent researchers, as well as case conferences by departmental faculty and residents.

Darrel Regier, MD, Director of Research at the American Psychiatric Association, will present at Grand Rounds on February 7; Kathleen Merikangas, PhD, Chief of Genetic Epidemiology at the National Institute of Mental Health will give a presentation on comorbidity of mental and physical disorders on March 27; and on May 1, Alan Carr, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology at University College in Dublin, will present on the psychological adjustment of adult survivors of institutional abuse in Ireland.

Chairman Mark Sedler, MD will lead off the series with his State of the Department address on September 13. Dr. Max Fink will describe the results of his comparisons of cannabis and hashish use in New York and Athens; Dr. Judith Crowell will present her research on the relationship between childhood adversity and the development of metabolic syndrome in mid-life; and Dr. Joseph Schwartz will give a presentation on his research. The Applied Behavioral Medicine Research Institute will give two presentations.

Senior faculty from Columbia University, University of Connecticut, Albert Einstein, NYU, Yale, Brown, Mount Sinai and other medical centers in the region will cover a range of topics in adult and child psychiatry, epidemiology, nosology, psychoanalytic theory, Alzheimer’s Disease, and others. There will be talks on the relationship of depression to diabetes, the heritability of depression, the prevention of schizophrenia, and the psychotherapy of schizophrenia and borderline personality disorders.

Professor Steven Cole, MD, who has organized the Grand Rounds program for the past five years will be stepping down as Coordinator. Drs. Evelyn Bromet and Laura Fochtmann will take on the role. Dr. Cole will remain a tenured Professor in the Department working part-time in the World Trade Center program.

The Grand Rounds series runs from September 13, 2011 through June 5, 2012 on Tuesday mornings from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. They are held in Lecture Hall 6 on level 3 of the Health Sciences Center.
