Mark Sedler, MD, Organizes International Study Program in Colombia

This summer, Mark Sedler, MD, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, will accompany four Stony Brook University medical students to Cartagena Colombia, where they will complete electives in a variety of specialties.

“Our goal is to enhance our students’ linguistic and cultural competency in Latin America,” Dr. Sedler said. “We also want them to learn about medical conditions that may be uncommon in the United States and to become familiar with the medical infrastructure and approach in this setting.”

The students are Demetris Haldeos, a fourth year medical student; Joanne Castañeda, a student of the School of Dental Medicine; and Jakub Tatka and Brian Kristoff, both second year medical students. They will rotate on clinical services at private and public hospitals and clinics, including psychiatry, oral surgery, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, and surgery.

In 2009 Dr. Sedler negotiated a memorandum of understanding on behalf of Stony Brook University for a medical student exchange program with Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University and Dentistry at the Corporación Universitaria Rafael Nuñez in Cartagena Colombia. The summer program is being underwritten by the Stony Brook School of Medicine Alumni Association and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.
