The Dietetic Internship Program is sponsored by the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. The On-Site Stony Brook University Dietetic Internship Program has an emphasis in clinical nutrition therapy. The program includes 61 hours of orientation and seminars, 38 weeks of rotations, and RD examination review sessions. The Internship is 1215 hours in length. Orientation begins in early September, just after Labor Day. Rotations and seminar starts immediately after Orientation. Seminars are held on Mondays and rotations are Tuesday through Friday every week. The internship year will end in June.
Highlights of the On-site Dietetic Internship:
- Housed in a large Nutrition Division integrated with the Renaissance School of Medicine and Stony Brook University Hospital. You routinely interact with physicians, medical residents, nurses and nurse practitioners at interdisciplinary case conferences, grand rounds, walking rounds, and informal educational activities
- Integrative nutrition therapy perspective
- Advancement of counseling skills through the use of Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs)
- Involved in robust CQI projects and clinical research projects
- Farm to hospital food service integration. Produce is harvested from the Nutrition Division's own hospital rooftop farm.
- Malnutrition training
- Access to SBU library system, e-journals, e-databases (such as Natural Standard)
- Interns have a three-week elective rotation to allow for further development of interests. Examples of past placement options include private practice, NICU, Stony Brook University's Athletic Department and a renal facility.
- Accredited to accept up to 16 interns.
Each intern is required to have his/her own form of transportation, as many rotations will be completed outside of Stony Brook University Hospital. Not all interns will complete their nutrition therapy rotation at Stony Brook University Hospital. All rotations are within 50 miles of Stony Brook University.
