Alex Choi, M.D.

Alex Choi, M.D. received his medical degree from the University pf Illinois College Of Medicine in Peoria and holds Bachelor’s in Psychology and Biology.  Dr. Choi was born in Oklahoma and movedto South Korea at age 9.  Nine years later, he headed back to the United States with the dream of pursuing a career in medicine.  He has since grown accustomed to change and welcomes life’s unique challenges.  On the road to the world of medicine, Dr. Choi provided social services at a settlement home in New York and was a teaching assistant at Scratch DJ Academy, where he was dubbed DJ “ChoiBoy” and witnessed the healing power of music.  Through his studies, Dr. Choi has been involved in research that examined a screening tool for obstructive sleep apnea in children and a project that investigated child fear development.  He also revived a

Psychiatry Interest Group and volunteered as the group’s vice-president.  He served as assistant director of the Peoria Primary Care Advisory Committee; Community Outreach Director to a Med-Peds Interest Group; and was first violin of the Peoria Pops Orchestra.  Perhaps more importantly, Dr. Choi has been captain of his local volleyball team – a skill we are sure to take advantage of at our annual volleyball game!  Dr. Choi finds that Med-Peds triggers the same feeling that inspired him to return to America and resonates strongly with the three principles he has lived by – remember your roots, embrace diversity, and pursue personal happiness.  We are pleased to have Dr. Choi on our team and look forward to watching him achieve his dream.

Why Med-Peds? The peds patients and the medicine problem-solving

Why Stony Brook? I wanted to come back to the East Coast. There are several good programs around the NYC area, but JT (program director) really made a big impression on me as a person I wanted to work with and learn from. He has great passion towards the program, and I could feel that passion rub off onto all the residents. I felt a lot of great potential.

What do you plan on doing when finished residency (if known)? I'm keeping an open mind. I've always been inclined to the med-peds hospitalist career, but I also like peds cardio, adult GI, and med/peds endo.

Outside interests: Cooking (Korean, Italian, Thai), Turntablism, and buying stuff off of Amazon.
