Ana Maria Lopez M.D.

Ana Maria Lopez, M.D., received her BS in Biology from CUNY The College of New York and obtained her MD from SUNY Downstate. While in medical school she had an interest in health equity and social justice, heading the Admissions Subcommittee for Downstate's Health Equity and Social Justice Workgroup, where she helped develop a Pre-Med Mentorship Program in which current medical students guided and mentored college students underrepresented in medicine and interested in applying to medical school. She also found her passions for medical education, working as a Near Pear Educator, coordinating a Respiratory Sounds Review Session for 2nd year medical students, Co-teaching the anatomy course, and helping develop an educational blog for medical students called The Downstate of Mind.

Hometown: Valley Stream, Long Island

Why Med-Peds?: My patients are the reason I chose Med-Peds. I could not imaging going my whole career without seeing another child nor could I imagine not seeing another adult. As a Med-Peds physician I can care for my patients lifelong and I have the privilege of being able to provide medical care to anyone.

Why Stony Brook?: I am so grateful to have matched at Stony Brook because my colleagues truly value teamwork and mentorship. As a hospital that provides care to anyone, regardless of insurance, I am able to provide the best care to patients who otherwise cannot afford to seek medical care.

What do you plan on doing when finished residency (if known)? After residency I hope to stay affiliated in an academic hospital in order to fulfill my love of both "doctoring" and teaching.

Outside interests: During my free time I like to cuddle up with my fur babies (Pancake and Remy) and relax. They are the best way to end my day.
