Dr. Farooq earned a dual degree from University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Farooq worked as an EMT before enrolling at Leonard Miller, where he readily took part in activities focused on preventive health and improving access to health care for underserved populations. During medical school, he saw many crossovers in care where patients with childhood diseases were surviving into adulthood and many common adult ailments were presenting in children. This encouraged him to work on a project to transition patients from pediatric to adult care. Dr. Farooq is highly motivated by the personal relationships built through family centered and continuity care, as well as being part of an academic team. He hopes to bring his knowledge and credibility to the public policy and advocacy arena. With that purpose in mind, he has already developed a medical/legal partnership program aimed at identifying patients in need of legal service. Dr. Farooq was honored to receive the 2013 Global Health Scholars Award to examine the association between heavy metals and the risk for disease outcomes. He also worked to improve international health on a medical mission to Nicaragua. Other volunteer efforts include Co-founder and Co-President of the Society of Hematology and Oncology, Project Street Light, Ronald McDonald House, and Special Olympics. We welcome Dr. Farooq to our Med-Peds program and the Stony Brook Medicine community.
