Hans Chiang, MD, MBA

Hans Chiang, M.D., M.B.A comes to us from Indiana University and earned a Masters in Nutrition Science from Columbia University. Dr. Chiang sought his MBA to learn the business side of maximizing outcomes with limited resources and took internships with the Indiana State Department of Health and School of Public Health to identify the barriers to care. He found that one of the most important barrier that can be overcome by the Med-Peds physician was the transition period from childhood to adulthood. Dr. Chiang hopes to identify more precisely the issues that can be optimized with the goal of one day assisting with, or launching, programs to address them.  He has spent a great deal of time researching and working on nutrition and obesity prevention and was awarded the American Society of Nutrition Clinical Nutrition Internship in 2014.  In his free time, Dr. Chiang likes to write, cook and bake nutritious meals, read in Mandarin and English, sing, travel, and play basketball.

Why Med-Peds?: Versatility, intellectual challenge, depth of pathology seen, and endless career possibilities! And the babies.

Why Stony Brook?: I spent a year in Manhattan prior to medical school and fell in love with the city, which pushed me to look for residency programs within the vicinity. The tight-knit nature of the Stony Brook Med-Peds community also drew me here when I saw how the faculty and the residents were with each other during the interview. Lastly, this is a continuously evolving program and I am extremely excited to be a part of or contribute to that process.

What do you plan on doing when finished residency (if known)? I applied to Med-Peds with an interest in primary care, obesity medicine, and Med-Peds Endo. Four months prior to residency I did an adult ICU rotation and to my surprise – loved it. Therefore, I am keeping an open mind. Regardless of what practice I end up, I intend to utilize business skills to facilitate care coordination programs which lower cost while maintaining or enhancing quality of care for my patient populations.
