Diversity

GI Fellows

The Department of Pediatrics, together with Stony Brook Medicine, is committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusivity in clinical care, research and medical education.  The Pediatric Department faculty and trainees established a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, with the goal of fostering and maintaining an environment that is respectful and inclusive to all. Wellness events promoting cultural awareness such as cooking classes and a very popular book club are just a few of the activities that have been initiated. Our own pediatric gastroenterology fellow is a member of the hospital DEI committee which develops and strengthens support and opportunities for groups under-represented in medicine, helping to create awareness and acceptance among all faculty, trainees and other personnel within our hospital system. Initiatives have been developed relating to recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority (URM) trainees to our programs, ensuring we are able to meet the needs of the diverse communities we serve. Stony Brook University has appointed a Chief Diversity Officer whose role is to oversee the university’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our efforts have received national recognition.
