Pathways to Success
Mission
The mission of Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University’s Pathways to Success is to ensure that our medical students achieve success along the concurrent paths leading to the MD degree and, ultimately, to residency.
Goal
Pathways to Success aims to promote our medical students’ academic and career success, personal well-being, and formation of professional identity throughout their undergraduate medical education.
Components
Pathways to Success is a comprehensive co-curricular program that integrates academic and career advising, peer feedback and self-assessment, and professional identity formation throughout all three phases of the LEARN curriculum. Pathways to Success is comprised of four components – Advising PODs, CAREERS, Peer and Self-Assessment, and Shelf Exam Support for Students.
Advising PODs provide small-group and individual academic advising and student support throughout Phase I of the LEARN curriculum.
CAREERS provides medical students with large- and small-group and individualized career advising through curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, events, information and resources.
The Peer and Self-Assessment program engages medical students in facilitated small-group peer feedback and self-assessment activities that are aimed at developing their collaborative skills.
Shelf Exam Support for Students provides additional academic support to students who experience marginal academic performance in Phase I in order to minimize the risk for NBME shelf exam failures in the Phase II clerkships.
