Research Summary:

Dr. Carlos A. Tirado is involved in clinically based research using cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic techniques to elucidate cryptic unidentifiable structural chromosome abnormalities and the significance of these abnormalities in hematological malignancies and cancer as well as inherited and di novo syndromes. Dr. Tirado has been involved in Cytogenomics of Pancreatic Cancer with several groups worldwide.

Clinical Practice:

Dr. Tirado is Board certified in Clinical Cytogenetics (2007) and he also holds a New York State Certificate of Qualification for the area of Cytogenetics since 2004.  Dr. Tirado is the Head of Cytogenetics at Stony Brook Medicine. Under his direction, the Cytogenetics Laboratory performs chromosome analysis on patients undergoing prenatal diagnosis, patients with inherited genetic disorders, mental disabilities, developmental delay, autism, and adults and children with cancer.  This involves standard chromosome analysis, molecular cytogenetics (FISH) and sub telomere analysis (FISH) on: bone marrow, solid tumors, lymph nodes, peripheral bloods, amniotic fluid, and products of conception.  The Cytogenetic laboratory is the ONLY laboratory in Suffolk County certified to perform cytogenetic analyses on pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) for the Children's Oncology Group (COG).  Dr. Tirado is also involved in teaching medical students, residents and attendings.
