Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

Sierra Washington, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who provides comprehensive obstetrics and gynecologic care at Stony Brook Medicine. She is also the Director for Global Health in Sub-Saharan Africa for Stony Brook Medicine. Dr. Washington practices primarily in Mozambique where she leads a Global Health Collaboration between Stony Brook Medicine and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane. The mission of this collaboration is to work together to provide excellent care, education, and research in order to eliminate health disparities and mutually strengthen institutions of Stony Brook Medicine and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and Central Hospital Maputo.

Dr. Washington has published numerous articles and her work has appeared in International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, among others. She has spoken regionally, nationally and internationally on a range of topics, including HIV and pregnancy and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in the U.S. and abroad. Her experience also includes working as a physician in sub-Saharan Africa, where she helped fight the HIV epidemic. She has worked for many years at the intersection of HIV and reproductive health in countries such as Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

 


Cassandra HeiselmanCassandra Heiselman, DO, MPH
Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

Dr.Cassandra Heiselman is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine and is the Associate Program Director for the Fellowship in Global Women’s Health. She is an accomplished researcher and will mentor the fellow in their first year of fellowship in the United States.

Dr. Heiselman is primarily focused on developing advanced obstetric ultrasound skills among OBGYN specialists in Mozambique and standardization of inpatient antepartum care at Hospital Central de Maputo.

Dr. Sibone Mocumbi is the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and the Residency Director for Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hospital Central de Maputo. He is committed to promoting evidence-based medicine and training the next generation of Women’s Health specialists for Mozambique.

Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

Dr. Amy Lasky is an Assistant Clinical Professor and member of the Global Women’s Health Faculty Core. Her work in Mozambique focuses on training on Vacuum delivery and Emergency Obstetric Simulations at Hospital Central de Maputo.

Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

Dr. Xun (Julie) Lian is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Minimally Invasive Gynecology and a member of the Global Women’s Health Faculty Core. Dr. Lian runs the Stony Brook Medicine Operating Room Donation Program which sends surgical equipment and supplies to Mozambique. She is also focused on developing a sustainable laparoscopic service in Hospital Central de Maputo.

 

 


PlairAndre Plair, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

Dr. Andre Plair is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and member of the Global Women’s Health Faculty Core. His work in Mozambique focuses on training Mozambican Ob-Gyn Specialists in pelvic floor surgery, and correction of incontinence using autologous materials.
