Erin Casella, MA, CPT
Clinical Research Associate
Erin Casella is the Clinical Research Associate for the OBGYN Department. She earned her BA in Biological Anthropology from Drew University and her MA in Evolutionary Biology from Columbia University. During her graduate work she designed her own research investigating the effects of diet, captivity and urbanization on the gut microbiome and health of wild populations of animals in NYC. Erin has traveled the world to Kenya and Uganda where she furthered her studies, gained essential skills in data collection and developed her skills working with vulnerable populations of individuals. Erin has been working at Stony Brook since 2018. Initially she worked as a Proposal Coordinator supporting Stony Brook’s scholarly community in their pursuit of external funding. She then went on to spend 4 years in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health as a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) where she managed clinical research studies in the fields of psychology and psychiatry. She worked directly with study participants and specialized in advanced recruitment methods. Erin is a certified phlebotomy technician (CPT).
In her current role, Erin assists faculty and residents with their research, IRB submissions and REDCap management. She assists directly on large studies within the department by helping out with recruitment, maintaining recruitment schedules for residents and overseeing medical student participation. She also acts as the liaison for medical students, graduate students and undergraduate students who wish to get involved with research opportunities within the department, which includes onboarding students, allocating them to appropriate studies, overseeing their performance and facilitating their relationship with faculty members and residents. Additionally, she plays a major role in Resident Research Day (RRD) and works closely with residents to formalize and prepare their studies from ideas into working studies that are compliant with IRB guidelines.
