Research Spotlight: Plant-Based Protein Diet May Help Reduce Inflammatory Bowel Disease Severity

Congratulations to David C. Montrose, PhD and his collaborators on their newly published research in Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The Stony Brook-led study sheds light on how dietary protein sources influence inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), demonstrating that pea protein significantly reduced colonic inflammation in experimental models compared with beef-derived protein. The findings provide important insight into the relationship between diet, the gut microbiome, and IBD severity, and may help inform future dietary strategies for patients living with these conditions.
