About

Mission

The primary mission of the Department of Physiology & Biophysics is to develop and maintain excellent research, teaching, and graduate and post-graduate training programs in molecular, cellular, and integrative physiology and biophysics.

Primary Functions of the Department

  • Provide a first class, nationally recognized research program in molecular, cellular, and systems physiology and biophysics
  • Provide graduate and post-graduate training whose success will depend upon the quality and strength of the research program
  • Provide educational services for the Medical School and Health Sciences Center programs, including teaching of medical, dental, and allied health program students
  • Provide administrative services for the Medical School and Health Sciences Center programs, including contributions of the faculty to standing committees and in the recruitment of faculty for the department and the school in general

Primary Research Areas in the Department

  • Regulation of cell and organ function
  • Intercellular and intracellular signaling mechanisms
  • Biophysical studies of membranes
  • Cellular and systems electrophysiology and neurobiology
  • Mathematical modeling of cellular, integrative, and systems function
