Dr. Palmer is Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Cell Biology at Smith College in 1972. Her medical student training and Internal Medicine residency were at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr Palmer completed her Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine in 1985.  She was an Assistant Professor at North Shore Hospital from 1985-1991.  In 1991 she came back to Stony Brook as a faculty member of the Pulmonary/Critical Care Division, Department of Medicine.  She is the Director of the Respiratory Care Unit where chronically ventilated patients are hospitalized while weaning from mechanical ventilation and recovering from chronic critical illness. Her research activities include a long-standing interest in infection in both ventilated and non-ventilated patients. Oral colonization and airway inflammation, including that associated with ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis and ventilator-associated pneumonia, are areas of interest. Optimization of the use of inhaled antibiotics in ventilated patients is another major focus of her research.  Clinical interests include bronchiectasis and chronic respiratory failure in patients with neuromuscular disease.
