Application Requirements

Requirements for Admission:

  • Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree from a US-accredited college/university or foreign equivalent with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Language proficiency exam if English is not the first language; refer to SBU website regarding foreign students: https://www.stonybrook.edu/hsbulletin/admissions/International-Students.php
  • Please note: this program cannot accept international students.

For applicants with a DPD Verification Statement 

  • Students with a DPD Verification Statement dated less than 7 years from the program anticipated start date have met all coursework prerequisites.
  • Students with a DPD Verification Statement dated greater than 7 years ago from the program anticipated start date can be conditionally admitted into the program pending successful completion of the following courses (These courses must be taken in the summer prior to matriculation into the MS in Professional Nutrition Practice which begins in the fall term.):
    • HFN 506: Food Science Systems
    • HFN 507: Nutrition Physiology and Metabolism
    • HFN 508: Concepts in Nutrition Therapy

In lieu of an additional advanced level nutrition course, work experience in the field of nutrition can be counted on a case-by-case basis with a supervisor's letter of recommendation.

For applicants without a DPD Verification Statement, the following prerequisites are required:

Once these prerequisites are satisfied, students can be conditionally admitted into the program pending successful completion, with a grade of B or better, of the following courses (These courses must be taken in the summer prior to admission into the MS in Professional Nutrition Practice which begins in the fall term):

  • HFN 506: Food Science Systems
  • HFN 507: Nutrition Physiology and Metabolism
  • HFN 508: Concepts in Nutrition Therapy

Prior Learning Experience: Stony Brook MS in PNP does not grant credit for prior learning experience or accept transfer credit for coursework.
