We are delighted to announce that Dr. Jun Chung was inducted this past Friday, June 5, by Professor Iwao Ojima (SUNY Distinguished Professor) to become a member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). President Andrea Goldsmith was also in attendance and delivered an inspiring message as our keynote speaker.
The NAI is an organization comprising U.S. and international universities, governmental agencies, non-profit research institutes, and corporate/industry organizations. "It was founded to recognize inventors with U.S. patents, to enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation, to encourage the disclosure of intellectual property, to educate and mentor innovative students, and to create wider public understanding of how its members’ inventions benefit society".
Stony Brook University ranks 56th world-wide and 34th nationwide in receipt of U.S. patents. In the State of New York, SBU ranks third among all public and private universities, surpassed only by Cornell and Columbia. For comparison with other national universities, SBU is slightly behind Yale (30th) but we far surpass many other renowned universities including UVA, the University of Chicago, Emory, Vanderbilt, NYU, and Princeton.
The Pathology Department ranked first among all Departments at Stony Brook University (Combined East and West campus) with 5 new patents issued in 2025, including patents to Drs. Jun Chung, Jingfang Ju, Kenneth Shroyer (with Dr. Luisa Escobar-Hoyos), Young Hwa Song, and Tianhao Zhao. These accounted for one third of all patents awarded to faculty in the RSOM in 2025.
Congratulations to Dr. Jun Chung on his induction as a member of the NAI, and to the achievements of every member of our department!
