Fellow's Research: Scholarly Activity

I. Core Requirements & Philosophy

All fellows are required to engage in a hypothesis-driven research project. You may choose to focus on:

  • Clinical Research
  • Basic Science Research
  • Translational Research

The ultimate goal is the completion of a work product that meets the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) graduation requirements, with a strong encouragement to prepare a manuscript for publication in an academic journal.

II. Your Mentorship Team

You will be supported by two distinct oversight bodies:

  1. Pediatric Fellowship Scholarly Oversight Committee (PFSOC): Provides broad departmental guidance for all fellows.
  2. Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC): A personalized three-member team created specifically for your project.
    • Composition: One division faculty member, one PFSOC member, and one faculty member from outside the division.
    • Role: Provides ongoing evaluation, guidance, and feedback through meetings held twice a year.

III. Timeline & Reporting Milestones

  • Quarterly Updates: Fellows must provide updates on recruitment progress, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Active Participation: You are expected to lead the development of the research question, hypothesis, methodology, and statistical analysis.
  • Presentation: Scholarly activity includes presenting your findings at research meetings.

IV. The Fellow's Research Course (3-Year Curriculum)

This structured course provides the technical foundation for your project.

  • Foundations: Self-study CITI Training, Introduction to Ethics, and Principles of Clinical Research.
  • Technical Skills: Statistics and Epidemiology (Parts 1-3), Data Management Tools, and Advanced Literature Search.
  • Professional Development: Grant Writing (Basic and Clinical), Teaching and Communicating your Research, and Critically Appraising Literature.
  • Advanced Topics: Advanced Quality Initiatives and Biomedical Research Resources.
