Welcome: Pediatric Hospitalist Fellowship Program

Message from the Program Director
Dr.Maribeth hitkara

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Fellowship Program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital! Our training program will provide fellows with the optimal learning environment required to build the knowledge and cultivate skills necessary to practice and teach Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is part of Stony Brook Medicine, a network of hospitals providing care to more than 1.5 million residents in Suffolk County, New York. Stony Brook Children’s is Suffolk County’s first and only children’s hospital. With more than 180 pediatric specialists in 30 specialties, we are also the county’s only Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center and Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center. Our Pediatric Hospital Medicine team cares for a wide variety of children from Long Island with diverse pathology and levels of complexity. We are home to the nation’s first Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center and also have a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Center, Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity Center, Healthy Weight and Wellness Center, Cystic Fibrosis Center, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program, and a Pediatric HIV and AIDS Center.

Stony Brook University is our academic partner and is part of a large, state University with over 17,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate students. PHM fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with medical students from the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University.

The fellowship is newly accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education) and is looking forward to the recruitment of graduates with pediatric residency training. With mentorship from our 10 PHM faculty, we hope to engage inaugural trainees and give them the unique opportunity to help shape the program in accordance with our mission and values.

Fellowship is academically and clinically rigorous, but we strive to provide a rewarding experience and foster a culture and environment of growth for trainees. There is an abundance of personal and professional enrichment offered throughout the RSOM and Stony Brook University. Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area have a myriad of experiences to offer including beaches, parks, museums, restaurants, performances, and sporting events. We strive to ensure that PHM fellows are able to strike a balance between training and enjoying personal time with friends and family.
