Transforming Residency Training and Shaping the Future of Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook

At Stony Brook Emergency Medicine, our vision is to build a nationally and globally recognized residency program that sets the standard for clinical excellence, scholarly innovation, and humanistic care. We are committed to training future leaders in Emergency Medicine—physicians who excel at the bedside while advancing the specialty through education, research, health equity, and global engagement.

Our residency is founded on excellence, equity, innovation, and service, brought to life through six core pillars:

Robert Nocito, MD and Residency Director
  1. Clinical Mastery
We prepare residents to become agile, evidence-driven, and compassionate clinicians capable of leading in any emergency care environment—from high-acuity academic centers to global health settings. Our graduates embody integrity, adaptability, and professionalism in every patient encounter.
  2. Academic Leadership
We cultivate the next generation of educators, researchers, and institutional leaders. Through structured mentorship, national engagement, and leadership development, residents gain the tools to shape the future of academic emergency medicine and influence the evolution of the field.
  3. Scholarly Innovation
We foster a vibrant culture of discovery grounded in protected time, faculty mentorship, and robust research infrastructure. Residents contribute impactful scholarship across clinical practice, systems innovation, medical education, public health, and policy—advancing emergency medicine through rigorous, meaningful work.
  4. Equity and Access
We are dedicated to training physicians who champion justice, inclusivity, and culturally competent care. Through community partnerships and public health engagement, our program empowers residents to address health disparities, advocate for underserved populations, and advance equitable care locally and globally.
  5. Educational Excellence and Well-being
Our learning environment emphasizes active learning, thoughtful feedback, simulation, and curricular innovation. We prioritize well-being, mentorship, and resilience, ensuring that residents thrive academically while developing the empathy and insight essential to lifelong practice.
  6. Global Emergency Medicine and Public Health/Policy Leadership
We prepare residents to make an impact on a global scale through sustainable international partnerships, global health rotations, and opportunities in humanitarian response and public health. Our graduates are equipped to strengthen health systems, inform policy, and serve communities worldwide.

Our Commitment
Through these pillars, Stony Brook Emergency Medicine is shaping physicians who are not only expert clinicians but also scholars, educators, advocates, and leaders. Our graduates carry forward a commitment to excellence, innovation, and humanity—transforming the future of emergency care and improving health for all.
