The SUNY at Stony Brook Emergency Medicine Residency Program was established in 1990. The residency is a fully accredited, three-year training program, with 2017-2018 being the first year of an enhanced 16 resident/year complement, up from 10 residents/year. The primary focus of our program is to train physicians for the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine. Residents have the opportunity to master the diagnosis, treatment and disposition issues surrounding a multitude of disease processes and injuries. The training environment emphasizes progressive responsibility based upon the level of training and individual growth, with junior residents receiving maximal assistance and oversight while senior residents are permitted flexibility of medical decision-making. In real estate, location is everything. The same could be said of training in Emergency Medicine. Our location is unique. Stony Brook is located on the north shore of Long Island midway between Manhattan and Montauk. Stony Brook University Hospital is situated one mile form the Long Island Sound, and a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean and Peconic Bay (between the two forks of Long Island). The north fork of Long Island hosts a number of farms and vineyards. The south fork of Long Island is a popular vacationing spot (Hampton, Montauk). In addition, Stony Brook University Medical Center is a level-1 regional trauma center and tertiary care medical center for Suffolk County. This unique geography and set-up provides exposure to water injuries, farm injuries, boating injuries, industrial exposures/injuries, endemic illnesses and high-speed motor vehicle collisions in patients of all ages, race and socioeconomic status. The Stony Brook Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers a wide array of opportunities in addition to obtaining clinical expertise. We have a long-standing track record of providing educational course and assistance with medical student education. In addition, our research division is well-established as a leader in emergency medicine research. Residents are provided numerous opportunities to develop skill in other areas of medical practice such as academic medicine, research, emergency medical services and administration. Most importantly, the program can be tailored to each resident’s long-term goals and desires to be a leader in the field of Emergency Medicine.
