Voluntary faculty are faculty who are not on State-salaried faculty lines.
Voluntary faculty appointments include appointments of faculty from affiliated sites (VAMC, SHH, etc.), Research Foundation-salaried employees, community physicians with medical staff appointments, and research collaborators from other institutions.
Voluntary Faculty are expected to hold M.D., D.O., Ph.D., or equivalent degrees, and to have completed appropriate postdoctoral / academic training. Voluntary Clinical Faculty are expected to be board-eligible, licensed, or certified in their specialties.
In accordance with the Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, a voluntary clinical faculty appointment does not confer or imply membership on the Medical Staff of the Hospital*. However, termination of a voluntary clinical faculty appointment will result in ineligibility for Hospital Medical Staff membership and administrative termination of Medical Staff membership and any privileges granted.
Academic Ranks: Voluntary faculty can be appointed at the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor (Research, Basic Science Educator or Adjunct Clinical Educator), Associate Professor (Research, Basic Science Educator or Adjunct Clinical Educator), and Professor (Research, Basic Science Educator or Adjunct Clinical Educator).
Appointment and Term: Voluntary faculty are appointed and serve at the discretion of the Department Chair and approval by the Dean of RSOM. These are open term appointments that periodically reviewed by the Chair (every 3 years). There is no limit on the number of reappointments permitted.
Notice of non-reappointment will be provided by the Chair.
Qualifications: Voluntary clinical faculty should possess excellent clinical skills and be perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as excellent caregivers, and demonstrate commitment to the teaching of students, postdocs, residents, and fellows. Each department decides on the nature of required participation, such as the relative importance of teaching/supervising students and/or residents/fellows, engaging in scholarly activity, engaging in clinical activity, participating in department administration, and other activities. Voluntary Faculty must abide with all campus policies applicable to faculty.
Privileges of Voluntary Faculty: Faculty appointments carry many benefits and are the School’s way of recognizing faculty members' invaluable contributions. Voluntary Faculty have a Stony Brook University ID badge indicating their status, and can have access to campus buildings, campus and department activities, and Stony Brook University library services.
Promotion and Awards: A Department Chair may recommend promotion to a higher academic rank according to APT guidelines. Voluntary faculty members are eligible for RSOM awards at the recommendations of their Chair.
* There is a separate application and review process via the Medical Staff Office.
