2022 Annual Retreat
MSTP SPONSORED EVENT:
Location: Sunwood Estate: 90 Mount Grey Road, Setauket, NY 11733
On October 2, 2022, SBU MSTP held its 41st annual Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program Retreat at the picturesque, waterfront Sunwood Estate. We were very grateful to begin our retreat with remarks and Q & A by the newly appointed Renaissance School of Medicine Dean Peter Igarashi.
Senior MSTP Fellows made oral presentations on their research, junior research fellows made poster presentations, and all students prepared written research abstracts that are bound and distributed to all MSTP Fellows, their preceptors, Steering Committee members and all others who express an interest. This gives new students the opportunity to meet more senior MSTP Fellows and to be exposed to the range of MSTP research ongoing at Stony Brook. Senior students update each other on their progress and gain invaluable experience in presenting their work to a highly critical audience. Finally, Program Faculty have the opportunity to gauge and appreciate student progress.
The retreat is held at a SBU conference center on the shore of Long Island; weather permitting, it's a gorgeous site for lying in the grass or walking along the beach. Special events differing each year are part of the retreat, including panels by senior students on the Ph.D. years, transitioning back into medical school, and picking residencies. In some years, alumni or senior members of the medical school administration are invited to present on and discuss these or other topics.
Presentations are 15 minutes each. For planning purposes, students should limit their presentation to 12 minutes and reserve 3 minutes for question & answer period.
The retreat was divided into 2 sessions, separated by a panel discussion and lunch. Overall, it was a lovely day of fellowship and sharing research progress!
Please visit our Retreat Brochure to see the details of the day and the wonderful research our students are conducting.
