About the Laboratory... This laboratory is a division of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. This laboratory has been performing Lyme disease testing on clinical specimens since 1984. The laboratory is fully licensed and accredited by the NY Department of Health, JCAHO, and CAP. The laboratory performs approximately 36,000 Lyme disease tests on patient specimens per year.
Clinical Laboratory Services
- Lyme Disease Serologies:
- ELISA: The MTTT (Modified Two-Tiered Test) utilizes two immunoassays, based on multiple B. burgdorferi antigens, that have been cleared by FDA for this use. The MTTT begins with an ELISA immunoassay detecting highly specific VlsE1pepC10 antibodies to B. burgdorferi. Samples negative by this first-tier test do not require further testing. If the 1st tier IgM/IgG immunoassay is positive or equivocal, reflex testing by second tier whole cell sonicate IgM and IgG ELISA’s are performed.
- Immunoblot: A qualitative protein microarray assay for the detection of IgM and IgG antibodies to CDC specific B. Burgdorferi antigens. It is intended for use in testing of samples which have been found positive or equivocal 1st tier ELISA.
