Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Clinical Rotations

Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry at Northport VA Hospital, Northport, NY

A three-month rotation (60% time) with a caseload of seven patients under the direction of a board-certified psychiatrist.

Geriatric Outpatient Program at Stony Brook Medicine

A twelve-month rotation (20% time) with eight hours of patient contact each week with exposure to comprehensive assessments, case supervision and treatment planning focusing on the assessment and management of patients with co-morbid psychiatric and medical problems.

Stony Brook Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease (CEAD)

A twelve-month rotation (20% time) under the direction of the Director of Geriatric Psychiatry, and Medical director of CEAD. The fellow typically evaluates two new patients each week who are referred for assessment of cognitive impairment/ dementia.

Palliative Care Service at Stony Brook Medicine

A one-month rotation (60% time) where fellows will work with an interdisciplinary team consisting of palliative care physicians, nurse practitioners, a social worker, and a chaplain in the inpatient hospital setting

Treatment-refractory depression program at Stony Brook Medicine

A one-month rotation (60% time) with exposure to ketamine and transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatments for older adults with treatment-refractory depression under the supervision of a board certified psychiatrists.

Long Term Care at the Northport VA Hospital, Northport, NY

A three-month rotation (60% time) as a geropsychiatric consultant in a long term care setting under the supervision of a board certified psychiatrist with extensive experience in geriatric psychiatry and long term care. Fellows see two to three new patients each week and follow approximately fifteen patients weekly. They serve in a liaison capacity with the multidisciplinary treatment staff of a nursing home.

Movement Disorder’s Center at Stony Brook Medicine

A one-month rotation (60% time) with exposure to patients with complex movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease under the supervision of expert neurologists in the treatment of movement disorders.

Psychiatric Inpatient Consultation and Liaison Service at Stony Brook Medicine

A three month rotation (60% time) providing C&L services to a geriatric inpatient population under the direction of consultation and liaison psychiatrists.

Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) service at Stony Brook Medicine

A three-month experience (10% time) with exposure to acute and maintenance electro-convulsive therapy under the supervision of an experienced board certified psychiatrist.
