Inpatient Service
The Stony Brook inpatient service is typically covered by junior fellows, who see new consultations and inpatient follow ups in addition to perform inpatient procedures under the supervision of a GI attending physician. During the first 12 weeks of the year (starting July 1st) there is an additional senior fellow on the inpatient service to provide orientation and supervision to the new 1st year fellows. A dedicated mid-level provider will be joining the inpatient service team in the near future.
Hepatology
Hepatology training is provided with a combination of inpatient and outpatient experience. The inpatient GI and hepatology consultative and procedural services are combined and staffed by the inpatient attending. Whereas in the outpatient setting, fellows rotate on the liver rotation, where they work with the hepatology attendings in clinic, managing a diverse patient population with various acute and chronic liver ailments. In addition, fellows have their own panels of hepatology patients (supervised by a hepatologist), whom they see on the first Wednesday of each month. Trainees also get an opportunity to do outpatient procedures such as variceal banding with the hepatology attendings in their Endo or Flex rotations.
IBD
IBD training is provided with a combination of inpatient and outpatient experience. The inpatient GI and IBD consultative and procedural services are combined and staffed by the inpatient attending. In the outpatient setting, where they work with the IBD attendings in clinic, managing patients with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Fellows also perform outpatient procedures such as surveillance colonoscopies, chromoendoscopy etc. while caring for IBD patients with the IBD attendings.
Motility Service
Motility training is provided generally in the outpatient setting. Fellows see patients with the motility attendings in the outpatient office and also work with the motility nurses and attendings in the motility lab; performing and reading motility studies such as esophageal manometry, pH testing and breath tests.
General GI and Colon Cancer Screening
General GI training is provided with a combination of inpatient and outpatient experience. In the inpatient setting, the service is staffed by the inpatient attending. Whereas in the outpatient setting, fellows work with the general GI attendings in clinic, managing patients general GI ailments, such as GERD, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, IBS etc. Fellows also get an opportunity to do outpatient procedures such as screening colonoscopies and endoscopies with the general GI attendings.
Outpatient Clinic
In addition to seeing patients with the general GI attendings and subspecialty attendings in the outpatient office, the fellows have their own panel of patients (supervised by attendings), whom they follow longitudinally throughout their fellowship. The first-year fellows have their outpatient clinic at the VAMC every Thursday afternoon, while the 2nd and 3rd year fellows have their clinic at Stony Brook (Tech Park office) every Wednesday afternoon. The first Wednesday of every month is dedicated to liver patients.
Outpatient Endoscopy
In addition to doing procedures with the general GI attendings and subspecialty attendings in the endoscopy unit, the fellows (on a rotating basis) have their own panel of patients (referred from their outpatient clinic) in the endoscopy unit every Wednesday afternoon.
Biliary/Therapeutic/Interventional Endoscopy Service
Biliary/Therapeutic/Interventional training is provided with a combination of inpatient and outpatient experience. The inpatient biliary service is separate from the GI service and is a consultative and procedural service. It is staffed by the 4th year advanced endoscopy fellow and either a 2nd or 3rd year GI fellow. In the outpatient setting the fellows see patients with the biliary attendings in the outpatient office.
Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center
Fellow rotations at the VAMC comprise of a combination of elective outpatient endoscopy (including Enteroscopy/ ERCP / EUS), inpatient endoscopy and consultation as well as outpatient clinic. A variety of pathology encompassing hepatology, general gastroenterology, IBD, motility, neoplasia etc. are seen and cared for under the guidance of seasoned faculty.
