Stony Brook Orthopaedic Journal Introduction

This publication marks our seventeenth annual research compilation, and our tenth Patient Safety/Quality Improvement publication. While this journal remains a reflection of our residents and fellows annual research efforts, the focus is intended to showcase our commitment to patient safety and quality improvement. Each project is intended to reduce complications, improve outcomes, and answer lingering questions in the subject areas.

As we applaud them for achieving a tremendous milestone, I want to remind you of the context. This resident class was heavily impacted by COVID-19, they had finished their intern year and over eight months as Orthopaedic juniors when the world changed forever. They spent the better part of the next year doing direct care of these horribly sick patients. Each one of them contributed significantly without complaint. As the world has grown accustomed to rewriting history, those of us who were there still know who the heroes are.

These resident graduates are entering quality fellowships, and our two hand fellow graduates are embarking on private practice; all stand to represent us well in the future.

Sincerely,
Jim Penna, MD
