Introducing Dr. Megumi Mathison

We are very pleased to announce that Megumi Mathison, MD, PhD,&nbsp;joined our faculty in June 2011 as research associate professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Mathison comes to Stony Brook from Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, where for the past 8 years she was a senior scientist at the Saint Joseph’s Translational Research Institute, and conducted cardiovascular pre-clinical research.</P>
<P>At Stony Brook, Dr. Mathison joins the team of our Cardiac Surgery Lab. She will be supported by the research grant from the Lisa and James Cohen Family, and she will play a leading role in our clinical and translational research in cardiovascular disease.</P>
<P class=bodytext>Prior to her position at Saint Joseph’s Translational Research Institute, Dr. Mathison worked for Miami Cardiac &amp; Vascular Institute (MCVI) and Biomedical Engineering Institute (BMEI) in Miami, FL. As MCVI’s Cook Research Scholar, Dr. Mathison conducted and presented research; wrote protocols, abstracts, scientific papers and grant proposals; administered procedural databases; and performed editing and statistical analysis on a variety of institute projects. </P>
<P class=bodytext>As assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Florida International University’s BMEI, she participated in joint research and teaching projects between MCVI and FIU. Dr. Mathison was also on staff at the Cardiopulmonary Research Science and Technology Institute in Dallas, TX. </P>
<P class=bodytext>As director of research development and publications, Dr. Mathison developed pre-clinical and clinical research projects in pediatric cardiac, pulmonary and thoracic surgery disciplines. Additional responsibilities included writing protocols, abstracts, scientific papers and grant proposals. She performed animal trials and advanced statistical analysis on a variety of institute projects. </P>
<P class=bodytext>As a pediatric cardiac surgeon and assistant professor at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand, Tokyo University, Tokyo, Japan, Kyorin University, Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Mathison assumed three roles: cardiac surgeon, researcher, and educator in teaching hospitals. Dr. Mathison received her MD from Tokyo Medical and Dental University and her PhD from Tokyo University. </P>
