About Us

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery comprises our clinical faculty of cardiothoracic surgeons, research team members, and support staff dedicated to our mission of excellence in the care of patients with heart, lung, and chest disease; the education of medical students and surgical residents in the art of cardiothoracic surgery; the performance of basic and translational research aimed at advancing the management of cardiothoracic disease; and community service, such as awareness campaigns, preventative programs, and support groups.

Our Team

The Division's faculty have been recognized for their clinical excellence by selection for inclusion in the present and past editions of the Castle Connolly Guides, America’s Top Doctors, representing the top 1% of physicians in the nation, and Top Doctors: New York Metro Area.

The Heart Institute

The Division provides both clinical services cardiac (heart) surgery and thoracic (chest/lung) surgery at Stony Brook University University Hospital. Our surgeons perform over 600 adult heart procedures and 200 adult thoracic procedures annually. They are leading members of the multidisciplinary teams of the Stony Brook Heart Institute and the Lung Cancer Evaluation Center, respectively.

For several years, the division has consistently received the three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its overall patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures. The three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places us among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada.

Together, the clinical and academic strengths of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery form the foundation of our continued success in achieving the excellence expected of us in our diverse programs of patient care, education, research, and community service.
