In Memoriam
Many of you know already the sad news that Jubin Kochummen, a PGY-1 in Family Medicine, passed away. His loss was a shock to all of us, and we will miss him greatly. A beautiful memorial was held on September 12 in SB Southampton’s Parrish Hall, where multiple people spoke, including his family, and many colleagues who worked with him, talked about his caring personality, his sense of humor, and his love for his family and his patients.
CLER Visit
As you all know, we had a CLER visit from the ACGME from October 9-11,2018. The CLER visit focuses in on the Clinical Learning Environment for residents, and they specifically drill down into 6 areas: Patient Safety, Health Care Quality, Transitions of Care, Supervision, Wellness/Well-being, and Professionalism. More specifically, the site visitors look into resident and fellow knowledge about these areas, engagement in projects and planning (especially for patient safety and quality improvement); the general approach across the institution to wellness and professionalism, and the areas of vulnerability in care transitions and supervision. The site visitors met in large groups with 60 residents and fellows, 60 faculty, all the program directors of programs based at Stony Brook, as well as me and the GME staff, the CEO, the Dean, other hospital leadership—particularly in Quality and Safety, and people involved in Wellness. On top of that, they walked around the hospital with resident guides, meeting with countless nurses, doctors, therapists, technicians, and the like. Additionally, they did a special new “Operative Protocol” where they went into the ORs and PACU and observed care there. In total they easily met with 300 people. So they really got a great overview of the hospital. We will have a report of their observations in about 6 weeks. The CLER visit occurs roughly every 2 years.
Wellness…Puppies!!!
We had a great “Puppy Social” on September 20th. Once again we had a visit with the junior team from Long Island Labradoodle, who both breed Labradoodles and train dogs to be therapy animals. Hard to say who enjoyed it more, the puppies or the residents who joined us.
Recruitment News
We are very happy to welcome some new faces to Stony Brook—our Hand Surgery, our Maternal Fetal Medicine program, our Vascular Neurology program, and our Surgical Critical Care program had successful matches, each bringing one fellow. It’s a long way off until they start, but we’re glad they’re coming.
Other fellowships in the match have completed interviews, and are waiting for the results of their matches. We wish them luck!
Core residency programs have begun the recruitment for the main residency match. It is a busy time of year for everyone. But Stony Brook programs always do very well…
Coming soon…Education and Communication Committees
Though delayed a bit by the CLER visit, we are meeting shortly for the first time for our Education and our Communication committees. The Education committee will think about what topics we should create learning opportunities for across all programs, and what venues should they occur in (workshops, online modules, lectures, etc). The Communication committee will be addressing ways to develop curriculum to improve how we interact with each other, both among ourselves and with other services, for the betterment of our patients. Both committees welcome all residents, faculty, program directors, and program coordinators. Dr. Jalal Bukhari(Oral Maxillofacial Radiology PGY-2) returned from the 69th American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) Annual Session where he received the Dentsply Sirona Clinical Award for the best poster on a clinical topic. The clinical topic was: Carotid artery calcifications (CAC's) detected by dental CBCT in patients with a history of hypertension . . . Dr.Mina Mahdian (Oral Maxillofacial Radiology Program Director) also attended the 69th American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) where she received the AAOMR XDR Research Grant Award. The award description: To recognize and foster the growth of an early career oral and maxillofacial radiologist by promoting bold, innovative high-risk, high-reward imaging sciences pilot research projects . . . Henry Jen (Gastroenterology PGY-5) received the "Outstanding Poster Presenter Award" recently by the ACG Annual Scientific Meeting Research Awards Committee at the annual American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) meeting in Philadelphia. . .Dr. Jamal Khan (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PGY-3) matched to a fellowship in Pain Medicine at University of Minnesota . . . Dr. Audun Lier (Internal Medicine PGY-3) has been accepted to the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Foundation's ID Week mentorship program . . . Dr. Victoria Shklar (Internal Medicine PGY-3) and Dr. Isaiah Schuster (Internal Medicine PGY-3) each won the "Outstanding Poster Presenter Award" at the American College of Gastroenterology meeting . . . Dr. Danielle Schwartz (Internal Medicine PGY-3) and Dr. Ruth Abeles (Internal Medicine PGY-3) and co-investigators have been selected as one of the top 10 abstracts for the SGIM Northeast Regional Meeting for their women's health curriculum project . . . Dr. Leena Matthew (Neonatology PGY-6) was one of 52 trainees in the country selected to participate in the High Value Practice Academic Alliance Future Leaders Program, and attended their national conference in Baltimore, MD in September . . . Dr. Matthew also presented her Quality Improvement project on Antibiotic Stewardship at three conferences in Chicago, IL, Chatham MA, and Washington, DC . . . Dr. Farah Hussain (Neonatology PGY-6) had her Quality Improvement Project on Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Prevention in the Neonatal ICU accepted at three conferences as well, in Coronado HSC Level 4, Room 176 - Tel: (631) 444-2084 Fax: (631) 638-0069 Island, CA, Chatham MA, and Washington, DC . . . Dr. Kevin Zarrabi (Internal Medicine Chief Resident) and Dr. Nirvani Goolsarran (Internal Medicine Associate Program Director have been selected to present a workshop at the Alliance for Academic Medicine Week 2019. The title of the workshop is “If you see something, say something: Strategies to Improve Error Report Rates” . . . Dr. Galen Leung (Gastroenterology PGY-5) and Dr. Qin Rao(Gastroenterology PGY-4) gave oral presentations to the New York Crohn’s and Colitis Organization in October, 2018 . . . GME Office placed 10th in the University-wide Healthier U wellness challenge. It was a lot of steps! Anyone can join us on our team, or create their own, next time the University holds a challenge.
