Didactic Training

Mandatory lectures (Half day per week that is protected for academic time):

  • Palliative Medicine core didactics
  • Journal Club
  • Interdisciplinary Palliative Care rounds
  • Interdisciplinary case presentations
  • Medicine Grand Rounds
  • Shared lectures: With Division of Geriatric Medicine and Hematology and Oncology

Hands on Training:

State-of-the-art Simulation Lab for communication and clinical skill building

  • Communication Curriculum
  • Hands on experience (e.g. withdrawal of mechanical vent, symptoms management)

Debriefings and Self-Care

  • Fellows meet monthly as a group with a supportive facilitator to discuss emotional and other challenges related to their training, wellness, and self-care.
  • Debriefing via daily Interdisciplinary team meetings and in real-time are also part of the curriculum

Program Director Meetings and Mentoring

  • Fellows meet with the fellowship director individually and as a group to discuss progress, career guidance, and mentorship.
  • Each fellow is also assigned a mentor at the start of training

Memberships and other Training Resources

  • Access to all Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) online modules
  • PalliTALK Fellows Communication Workshop (when opens)
  • Membership to the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC).

Local, Regional, and National Meetings

Fellows will have the opportunity to attend local and national conferences

Leadership and Committee Opportunity:

  • Fellows have the opportunity to participate in different committees throughout Stony Brook Medicine, including GME committees, Inclusion and Diversity committees, Quality and safety committees, and pain committee to name a few.
  • Our robust Palliative Medicine teaching program for medical students and other trainees here at Stony brook Medicine allows ample opportunity for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows to assume a leadership role in teaching. This in turn will provide fellows the experience and skill set to become academic leaders in Hospice & Palliative Medicine.
