Med-Peds Conferences
At Stony Brook, we have our own Med-Peds conference on Wednesday afternoons and preclinic outpatient conferences twice a month, consisting of didactics, journal clubs, simulation training, and board reviews. This allows our residents dedicated protected time to focus on their own education. Our Med-Peds core faculty regularly participate in the Med-Peds forums.
Med-Peds Primary Care Boot Camp: Core conference series at the beginning of the year is dedicated to reviewing the basics of the well adult, well child, basic chronic disease management of pediatric and adult diseases.
Resident Workshops: Once a month, one of our residents will lead the conference focused on the theme of the block. Each conference is interactive, involving residents, faculty, and medical students.
Ambulatory Conferences: One core conference per month is dedicated to an outpatient adult or pediatric topic using a case-based format.
EBM/Journal Club: Each senior level resident during their third and fourth year of residency is required to participate and lead a discussion on a recent journal article of their choosing associated with the topic of the month. Residents are encouraged to choose an article relevant to Medicine and Pediatrics. Our conferences is led by our faculty expert, Dr. Robert Abdullah.
Board Review: To aid the preparation of our residents to sit for both categorical boards, our residents come together once a month and work through Board-style question from both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The facilitator goes through the correct answer, key learning points, and techniques on how to answer Board-style questions.
Simulation: Four times a year, our residents participate in a tailored simulation experience with Dr. Sahar Ahmad, along with inpatient Med-Peds Faculty and the chief resident, to improve skills in ultrasound use, management of a critically ill patient, and other acute care scenarios.
Residency Meeting: Our curriculum wouldn’t be complete without allowing our residents to come together in a more relaxed setting to discuss and programmatic or logistical issues only our fellow Med-Peds residents can understand. Our Program Director, Dr. Tolentino, and Associate Program Director, Dr. Spinnato, is always present to hear our resident concerns and help make our program the best it can be. This meeting time is also used to discuss our quality improvement projects for our resident clinic.
Categorical Conferences:
Internal Medicine -
Resident Report: A core educational activity with participation from residents, medical students, and faculty from various divisions in the department of medicine. Cases are presented by the resident discussant facilitated by the chief resident, and followed by a resident-led didactic discussion exploring both key facts as well as the evidence behind diagnosis and management. In addition, a unique Fresh-Case from the wards that requires a complex work up or assistance for further work up is presented by the ward resident to a group of faculty and residents once every week.
Core Conference Series: In order to provide a robust learning experience, core faculty members from different subspecialties deliver clinically relevant topics. These topics are carefully selected based on ABIM recommended content areas
Grand rounds: Residents get the opportunity to present a clinical vignette during Medicine Grand Rounds in front of faculty, residents and fellows. This presentation prefaces the main talk, followed by introduction of the speaker by the resident. Residents are selected based on their interest in the specialty.
Simulation lab: On Wednesdays from 10-12, residents on Med-Peds Ambulatory Rotation participate in the Wednesday simulation sessions with the categorical internal medicine residents, integrating ultrasound diagnostic techniques during inpatient and acute care scenarios. Run by Dr. Sahar Ahmad, the simulation curriculum has been a very popular curriculum for med-peds residents.
Residency Advisory Councils: Once a month, resident representatives from each class and the med-peds residency program meet with the internal medicine residency leadership and chief residents to discuss issues with the residency program and provide direct feedback and ways to improve the function of the residency program and the delivery of care to our residents.
Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement Conference: Morbidity, Mortality and Improvement Conference traditionally provides an opportunity to discuss medical errors, adverse events and near misses. Stony Brook Medicine refocuses the content by stressing principles of patient safety, by emphasizing relationships between patient harm, cognitive errors and team-based competencies. Our MM&I addresses all six core ACGME competencies while teaching patient safety principles including root cause analysis and creating an effective action plan. We use MM&I to integrate the Joint Commission High Reliability model and Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality TeamSTEPPS principles of patient safety. Cases are chosen for identifiable systematic errors and potential actionable improvements for preventing future errors. Residents complete quality appraisals including a Root Cause Analysis, and incorporate best practices based on quality evidence. By the end of these multidisciplinary conferences, residents develop a real-time action plan for improvement and prevention of future errors.
Board Review: Board review is conducted by the chiefs and core faculty several times a
month at Stony Brook. It is an interactive session, which includes jeopardy and
board style questions, geared towards preparing our residents for the ABIM board
exam after residency.

Pediatrics –
Morning Report: Case presentations take place during morning report. Residents from all years, medical students, and faculty from various subspecialties attend these conferences. Initial presentation and management of admissions are discussed with input from expert faculty.
Grand Rounds: Traditional academic grand rounds are held on a weekly basis. Cutting edge medicine is presented by distinguished professors from all over the world. This conference is attended by residents, medical students, faculty, and community pediatricians.
Board Review: During their fourth year, Med-Peds residents attend an intensive weekly board review with a curriculum based upon the American Board of Pediatrics content specifications. Residents receive a structured, thorough integration of material from PREP and Pediatrics in Review. Residents are responsible for specific reading and quizzes before each session. The sessions are very well received by highly motivated learners in a challenging, but supportive study environment.
Resident Meetings: Open communication is essential for a residency
program to function well. One Wednesday each month, residents meet with
the residency program directors in a "town meeting" style forum to
discuss any issues related to the residency. This is a great opportunity
for the residents to voice any concerns they might have and to discuss any
potential changes in the residency program. In addition, the residents
elect "Class Liaisons" to represent them in smaller group sessions
with the program directors.
Academic Wednesday: This three year curriculum is designed with attention to the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) content specifications. The lectures are held on Wednesday mornings. Residents' time is protected during these sessions. Conferences address the broad range of topics required for general pediatrics training. In addition to the standard ABP content specs, our conference series covers topics such as ethics, quality improvement, patient safety, transitions of care, and evidence-based medicine.
Suffolk Pediatric Society Educational Meetings: This dinner meeting of our local section of the American Academy of Pediatrics occurs five times a year. After a short business meeting, there is an interesting educational presentation. Presentations include sessions on topics such as Cardiac Murmurs, Sports Medicine, and Adolescent Sexuality. All residents become members of the Suffolk Pediatric Society. Membership dues are paid by the department.
